The County of Montana is crossed by the Ogosta River, with the regional administrative center at Montana. It is the biggest transport crossroad of North-Western Bulgaria.

   Industry is the leading branch of economy, small and medium-sized enterprises are prevailing. The percentage of the industrial production produced in the private sector is steadily increasing.
   A tendency towards a steady decrease in the quantity of the industrial production have been observed in the Montana municipality after 1990. The decrease of the production is especially great in the leather and fur industry, in the shoemaking industry, in the textile and clothing industry and in the food and beverage industry.
   The private industrial firms are in a better position on both the internal and the foreign market.
   A big part of the active firms, works in the field of trade and repairs of cars and household appliances. The participation of the private sector determines the development of commerce.
   The building production has decreased very much because of the structural changes in the branch, the sharp rise in the prices of the building materials, the low investment activity of the economic subjects concerning the accumulation of new fixed assets.
   In the filed of agriculture, there are excellent conditions for the development of plant-growing, for mechanized cultivation of the land and for irrigation.
